Hallux rigidus is a stiffening of the extensor function of the big toe joint.
Due to the extremely restricted range of motion in the big toe, there is a change in the gait and rolling mechanism, which in the long term will lead to back problems. Several factors can be at the basis of this disorder.
Wear and tear of the cartilage, hereditary predisposition, trauma, overloading of the big toe joint over the years. Other causes can be linked to joint inflammation, such as rheumatism and gout, but the development of the diabetes condition can also lead to limited joint mobility in the big toe joint. The abnormality does not always result in localised pain.
After an extensive podiatric examination and after a check-up with an X-ray, it will be considered whether podiatric insoles can still improve the mobility of the joint. If the joint is too deformed, the patient will be referred to an orthopaedic foot surgeon for surgical correction.
